Broncos to Play Michigan Tech in Opening Round of GLI

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Great Lakes Invitational has announced its initial matchups for the 2024 event, which features Western Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan.

The Broncos will take on Michigan Tech in the opening round of play on Dec. 29 at 3:30 PM at Van Andel Arena. The winner will move on to play either Michigan State or Northern Michigan on Dec. 30 at 7 PM.

WMU has won the GLI each of its last four trips (2013, 2016, 2021 and 2022) and has five total titles. During its most recent trip to the GLI (2022), Western Michigan downed Michigan Tech, 8-1, in the semifinals and Ferris State, 8-2, in the championship.

The Brown and Gold have had the Huskies’ number of late, winning each of the last three meetings and four of the last five. WMU has outscored MTU 14-7 in that five-game stretch. The Broncos and Huskies both made the NCAA Tournament in 2023-24.

Western Michigan is coming off of a record-breaking season, which included 21 wins and a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Prior to the 2023-24 campaign, the Broncos had never made the NCAA Tournament in three consecutive seasons. Furthermore, WMU has now registered three straight seasons of 20 or more wins, which hasn’t happened since 1985-88.

Ticket packages for the 58th GLI will go on sale in September at VanAndelArena.com. It will be the third straight year the historic tournament will be staged in Grand Rapids at Van Andel Arena.
