Minnesota sophomore Jimmy Snuggerud announced he is staying in college for another season.

Snuggerud is a former first-round draft pick of the St. Louis Blues.

“After talking to Jimmy and his family the past couple days, the organization fully supports his decision to commit to another season at the University of Minnesota,” Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said. “We look forward to watching his continued development towards becoming a solid contributor for the St. Louis Blues in the future by playing a lead role for the Golden Gophers against top college competition next year.”

Snuggerud had 21 goals this season, matching his total from his freshman year, though after a torrid first half (18 goals) he had just three goals down the stretch.

Still, his impact was large for Minnesota this season and he should be a Hobey Baker Award candidate next year.

Minnesota recently lost in the NCAA Regional final to Boston University.

The announcement was first made on social media by Minnesota’s NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) collective, suggesting that there was some financial incentive for Snuggerud to return to Minnesota for another season. NIL allows players to receive money for using their name to promote something, although because of the haphazard nature of its implementation, in practice, players can receive money without necessarily taking part in a direct endorsement.

It should be noted, as well, that Logan Cooley announced around this same time last year that he would return to Minnesota for another season, but then wound up signing an NHL deal in the summer.
