Union Falls in Game One of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals

Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – In the first game of the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals, the Union College men’s hockey team fell to Dartmouth College, 3-1, on Friday night at Thompson Arena.

Sophomore Nick Young scored his second goal of the season and junior Caden Villegas registered an assist for his 28th point of the season.

The first period went back and forth before a Union went on the powerplay at 10:06. CJ Foley had a short-handed breakaway but was slashed while going to the net, resulting in a penalty shot. Sophomore Kyle Chauvette made the penalty shot save to keep the game scoreless. Union opened the scoring a few minutes later. The initial shot by Villegas was deflected into the net by Young for the blueliner’s second goal of the season.

Dartmouth struck only 33 seconds into the middle frame to knot the game at one. The Big Green took their first lead of the night on a two-man rush to beat Chauvette. Sophomore Colby MacArthur initially scored the equalizer, but Dartmouth challenged for offsides and the goal was called back.

A late penalty in the third period on the Big Green gave Union a powerplay with only 2:10 to play. Senior Liam Robertson had a great scoring chance, but his shot rang off the pipe.

Chauvette made 22 saves in the loss while Black stopped 23 shots.

The best-of-three series continues tomorrow. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
