Augustine Named Richter Award Finalist

East Lansing, Mich. — Michigan State freshman goalie Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich) is among the list of 10 semifinalists for the 2024 Mike Richter Award, given annually to the top goalie in men’s NCAA Division I hockey since 2014.

A  “Watch List” of 30 was narrowed down to the list of semifinalists, and will be further trimmed down to three finalists in early March.  The winner will be announced at the Frozen Four in St. Paul, Minn. on April 12.

Augustine is one of four Big Ten netminders on the list, and one of two freshmen.  He is the second Richter Award semifinalist in program history, joining Jake Hildebrand, who was on the list in 2015.

The freshman – the youngest goaltender in college hockey – has been a huge piece of the Spartan success this season, as MSU has spent the entirety of the season in the national polls for the first time since 2007-08 and has won 20 games for the first time since the 2007-08 season.  The Spartans sit atop the Big Ten standings, with the most victories (14) and points (46) in program history – and still regular-season games to gain further ground.

Augustine’s growth over the course of the season has allowed him to establish himself as one of the top netminders not only in the conference, but also across the country. His .917 save percentage is 13th nationally, he ranks in a tie for fourth in shutouts (3) and victories (18),  and is sixth in winning percentage (.731). His 844 saves is fourth among goaltenders nationally while his 1587:10 played in the Spartan crease is 10th nationally and the most of any freshman in the country.

The only two games Augustine has not played this season for the Spartans were in the Great Lakes Invitational, while he was earning a gold medal between the pipes for Team USA at the IIHF World Juniors.  Augustine led the tournament in both goals against average (1.75) and save percentage (.936), going a perfect 4-0 – including both the semifinal vs. Finland and the final vs. Sweden.  Augustine was playing in his second world juniors, winning silver in 2023 with team USA.
