11 Blue Devils Named to NFHCA National Academic Squad


DURHAM – Eleven members of the Duke field hockey team have been selected to the 2023 NFHCA Division National Academic Squad the organization announced Wednesday.

Earning recognition for their outstanding efforts in the classroom as well as the turf are Paige Bitting, Alayna Burns, Issy Carey, Kira Curland, Maggie Kondrath, Megan Maransky, Kyle Massey, Alaina McVeigh, Sophia Miller, Abby Spear and Macy Szukics.

Burns is a four-time honoree, while Carey and Maransky garnered their third National Academic Squad recognition. Bitting, Curland, McVeigh, Spear and Szukics are two-time recipients and Kondrath, Massey, and Miller picked up their first honors as freshmen for the Blue Devils.

Overall, 976 exceptional undergraduate student-athletes hailing from 79 esteemed institutions, each earning a distinguished place on the 2023 Division I National Academic Squad.

This prestigious acknowledgment is reserved for individuals who have achieved an outstanding cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher through the fall semester of the current academic year, nominated by their devoted NFHCA member coaches.

The Blue Devils had one of the best seasons in history, finishing the regular season with an 18-5 overall record and a No. 3 ranking in the NFHCA poll. Duke won a share of the ACC regular season title. Coming off a 7-11 season in 2022, Duke’s 18 wins marked an improvement of 8.5 to rank tied for 12th in NCAA history.
