Huskies, Fontaine Pull it Out in OT Again, Win 5th Beanpot in Last 6 Years

BOSTON — For much of the game, Boston University dominated play. If this was the olden days, the Terriers would’ve waltzed to a Beanpot championship. The program owned this tournament, it considered it a birthright to win it.

But this is today. And that is not the case anymore. The magic has shifted down the street, to Northeastern.

For the fifth time in six years, Northeastern is Beanpot champs. And again, it took a little magic.

At one point in the game, the shots were 23-7 in BU’s favor. They ended 36-17.

But Northeastern kept finding a way to hang in it. Between taking advantage of bounces, and freshman goalie Cameron Whitehead delivering timely save after timely save, the Huskies found themselves in overtime again.

There wasn’t much time left in the 3-on-3 overtime when the magic struck. Northeastern goaltender Cameron Whitehead made a few big stops in overtime, including a pad save on a two-on-one chance that formed late. And then the Huskies returned with a goal from Gunnarwolfe Fontaine with 28 seconds left in overtime.

Fontaine, the hero in last Monday’s Beanpot overtime game against Harvard, also getting the game winner, won the tournament MVP.

“It feels amazing. When you can win with your brothers out here, there’s nothing like it,” Fontaine said.

“You try to keep calm out there. You have the fans up there screaming their heads off. But I got great passes from Ritz (Justin Hryckowian) both of those games, so you have to give credit to him.”

Fontaine is the only player to ever score two overtime goals in the same Beanpot tournament. The senior is on a five-game point streak and may surpass his career high of 30 points this season. 

“He seems to get going really good this time of year,” Northeastern coach Jerry Keefe said. “Not just in The Beanpot, but he’s been playing his best hockey and as a coach, you see it every day down at the rink. You can kind of tell when guys are in a good spot because you see a smile on their face. You see them working really hard in practice, but enjoying it and joking with their teammates and you can just tell they got swagger. And obviously this time of year is…
