BU, Northeastern Advance to Beanpot Final

The semifinals of The Beanpot Monday night at TD Garden gave us some great games as they always seem to do. Game one between Harvard and Northeastern went to overtime for the second straight year with Gunnarwolfe Fontaine giving Northeastern a 3-2 win just 33 seconds into the extra frame.

Here is where I am going to put on my cranky old man hat, though. What are we doing here? Why are we playing 3-on-3 overtime in The Beanpot? Unfortunately, this is not a new argument, since it was appalling when it first happened a couple years ago. But it’s just as irritating now. I am generally in the minority in that I am a fan of the format for most regular-season games. It gives these uber-talented young athletes a chance to show off their skills, which is good for growing the game. However, these aren’t most regular-season games. The Beanpot means a ton to these teams and it’s silly to have them potentially be decided by a shootout.

In game two, BU was able to avenge its sweep at the hands of BC just one week prior. Macklin Celebrini, who is expected to be the first overall pick in this summer’s NHL draft, continued his red-hot freshman season, scoring twice to give BU a 2-0 lead less than seven minutes in. Celebrini now has 21-18—39 in 24 games. Oh, and by the way, he doesn’t turn 18 until June. BU extended the lead to 4-1 in the third period, but the Eagles were not going to go quietly. Goals from Gentry Shamburger and Gabe Perrault (his second of the game) got BC within one with eight minutes remaining. Mathieu Caron was good down the stretch, however, and the Terriers were able to hold off the late push.

BU will play Northeastern in the championship game on Monday at 7:30 ET. This is the third time in four years that BU and Northeastern have met in the title game.

Colorado College is Not Just a Good Story Anymore

Colorado College has found itself near the bottom of the NCHC a lot in recent years, but that is not the case this year. It currently sits third in the conference and deep in the national tournament mix at 17th in the Pairwise. This is after a somewhat inconsistent start that included a 2-6-1 stretch.

Recently, however, the Tigers have been playing their best, winning 10…
