Union Falls in Overtime at Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Union College men’s hockey team battled back from a three-goal deficit to force overtime, but fell 2:11 into overtime to Bentley University, 4-3, on Saturday night at Bentley Arena.

Seven different skaters found the scoresheet for Union. Seniors Chaz Smedsrud and Ben Tupker and junior Josh Nixon all scored in the third period. Senior Ville Immonen, junior Caden Villegas, sophomore Nate Hanley, and first-year Joey Potter all tallied assists.

Ethan Leyh scored a natural hat trick for Bentley which was the difference maker for the Falcons. The last hat trick to occur in a Union game was on October 15, 2022, when Tyler Mahan scored three times for RIT.

Leyh was the difference maker for the Falcons in the first period. The Quinnipiac transfer scored twice in a span of 2:05 to give Bentley a 2-0 lead.

The second period was all Bentley as the Leyh completed the hat trick. The Falcons peppered 27 shots on goal between the first two stanzas.

Union came out firing in the third period with two goals in 1:27 to make it a one goal game. Smedsrud scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Villegas sent a shot at Nicholas Grabko that bounced off the goaltender’s right pad right onto Smedsrud’s stick. The senior fired it home only 1:46 into the third period. Nixon potted his fifth goal of the season with an assist from Hanley to cut the lead to one. Tupker added his fifth goal of the season with a backhanded shot from the crease to tie the game.
