Joe Sharib Earns First Collegiate Win as Union Downs Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Union College men’s hockey team scored four unanswered goals and junior Joe Sharib earned his first collegiate win en route to a 5-4 victory over the University of Vermont on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

“Joe was key when we needed him,” said head coach Josh Hauge. “He came in in a tough situation and he made the most of it. We’ve been telling him that you’re going to get your opportunity and he got it tonight.”

Sharib was stellar in net, stopping 14 shots in 44:55 minutes of play, including 10 shots in the third period.

“(The win) means a lot for him,” said Hauge. “He’s been working so hard. He’s been a great teammate and it’s nice to see him get rewarded with the win.”

Five different goal scorers lit the lamp for Union and four registered a multi-point game. Sophomore Carter Korpi, senior Ville Immonen, and junior Josh Nixon all registered a goal and an assist. First-year Jacob Jeannette recorded a pair of helpers to round out the multi-point scoring. Sophomore Ethan Benz and senior Ben Tupker also lit the lamp in the win.

Vermont took an early 1-0 lead only 50 seconds in. The Catamounts capitalized on a double screen as Luca Munzenberger fired a wrister from the top of the left-wing circle and sniped one past sophomore Kyle Chauvette. Vermont made it a 2-0 game with a goal by Ralfs Bergmanis. Korpi cut the game to one, cashing in on a rebound off of Jeannette’s shot. Vermont reclaimed a two-goal lead with a goal from Philip Tornqvist, prompting a goalie change.
