Field Hockey Opens 2022 Preseason Training – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The 52nd season of Ohio State field hockey unofficially kicked off on Wednesday morning as the Buckeyes took the field for the first time with their initial practice of the preseason. In all, Ohio State will have 16 days to prepare for the regular season opener on Aug. 26 versus Northwestern in Albany, N.Y.

Roster Breakdown
The Buckeyes’ 30-person roster is a mix of new and old. While 15 players return from last year’s team, Ohio State welcomed 15 newcomers – 12 freshmen and three transfers.

While 84 percent of the Buckeyes’ goal-scoring production from a year ago returns in 2022, head coach Jarred Martin bolstered his roster with graduate transfers Grace Kim (from Duke) and Malen Iglesias (from Fairfield) along with sophomore Erin Little (Boston University).

The leading returning scorers are Leanne Bough, who has played in 48 career games, and Emma Goldean, a fifth-year player who was an All-Big Ten and All-Region selection last season. In goal, Abby Danson started eight games last year and overall has played in 22 contests over the last two seasons.

2022 Schedule Breakdown
The Buckeyes play 18 regular season games, beginning the weekend of Aug. 26-28 with games in Albany, N.Y. vs. Northeastern and Albany. The first chance to see the scarlet and gray at home will be Sunday, Sept. 4 vs. Lehigh (noon).

Two weeks later, on Sept. 16, the Buckeyes play their Big Ten opener at home against Maryland. Ohio State has four league games at home this fall: vs. Maryland, vs. Michigan State (Sept. 30), vs. Iowa (Oct. 14) and vs. Northwestern (Oct. 16).

Admission to all Ohio State field hockey games at Buckeye Varsity Field is free. Parking is also free in the lot surrounding the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Big Ten Tournament Coming to Columbus
One of the highlights of the 2022 schedule comes in November when Ohio State hosts the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament for the first time since 2013.

Quarterfinal action will commence on Thursday, Nov. 3, followed by a pair of semifinal games on Friday, Nov. 4. The championship game is slated for Sunday, Nov. 6. The tournament champion will earn the Big Ten’s automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.

What’s New in 2022
Fans who make their way to Buckeye Varsity Field this season will notice several new additions to the facility. The improvements start with a new astroturf playing surface that was installed late last spring. In addition, a new two-story press box is also being built and updated…
