UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No.11/12 Penn State women’s ice hockey team (10-3-0) defeated the Lindenwood Lions (2-10-1), 3-2 in overtime on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Nittany Lions struck first, capitalizing on a power-play goal where Lindenwood was called for hooking. At 12:38, Tessa Janecke found the back of the net from the top right circle off assists from Karley Garcia and Katelyn Roberts.
- Lindenwood was quick to respond with a power-play goal 15:10 into the contest Sidney Jackel as tipped the puck in front of the in to tie the score at 1-1. Jackel’s goal was assisted by Lindenwood’s Morgan Neitzke and Josey Dunne.
- Just 58 seconds into the second period, Maddy Christian drove the puck from center ice and fired a power-play goal in front of the net to put the Nittany Lions ahead 2-1.
- With only 2:29 to go in regulation, Lindenwood’s Morgan Neitzke broke away from the Nittany Lion defense and found the back of the net for an unassisted goal to tie the score at 2-2 and send the contest to overtime.
- The Nittany Lions rallied in overtime as Garcia was able to tap in the game-winner in front of the net off a feed by Alyssa Machado to secure the 3-2 victory with 2:51 remaining in overtime.
GOALTENDERS
- Junior Katie DeSa had a solid afternoon, making eight saves on 10 shots for a .800 save percentage in between the pipes. She improves to 7-3-0 on the season with today’s win.
- In the net for Lindenwood stood Anna LaRose, who made 48 saves on 51 shots equating to a .941 save percentage. After the loss, she drops to 1-7-0 this season.
STATS AND NOTES
- Penn State picks up their tenth win of the season to move to 10-3-0, their best start over 13 games since 2020.
- The Nittany Lions out-shot the Lions by a wide margin of 51-10. Penn State last fired 50 shots or more came on January 20, 2024 when the Nittany Lions fired 53 shots against the Orange.
- On the power play, Penn State outperformed Lindenwood, going 2-6 compared to the Lions’ 1-4.
- The win is the first time the Nittany Lions have scored two power-play goals in a single game since their match against Syracuse on January 20, 2024.
- Penn State now leads the all-time series against Lindenwood 33-10-6.
- The win is the thirteenth consecutive victory for Penn State over Lindenwood.
- Maddy Christian currently sits on a four-game goal streak with her tally in tonight’s game.
