Men's Hockey Opens Weekend with 5-3 Win Over Harvard

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (6-10-1, 4-6-0 ECAC) struck for five goal and took a 5-3 conference win over the Harvard Crimson (1-10-3, 1-5-3 ECAC) Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.

With the win, Brown picks up three ECAC league points to move into a tie for third alongside Princeton with 14 points.

“That was a great game by our team, I thought we played very well,” said head coach Brendan Whittet ’94. “I know Harvard is in a little bit of a lull right now, but they still have a ton of talent with 10 NHL Draft choices. I give them credit; they came back and made it a game; but more than that I thought our guys played really well for 60 minutes.

“There was just a lot of good things that I thought the guys executed on very, very well. They stuck to the gameplan and that’s a big win. It gives us three points at home on a Friday night against an Ivy rival and gives us the chance to go for the sweep tomorrow. You have to get points at home.

“Good maturity, guys came in who haven’t seen a lot of ice and I thought they played great. The first line was tremendous. Bottrill played center on the second line with Clark and that line was very good. Kopff had a good game and Brille was good coming in.”

After controlling play from the start, Alex Pineau struck for the night’s first goal on Brown’s second power play of the night 16:18 into the first period.

Max Scott won the offensive zone faceoff and Tyler Kopff moved the puck to Ryan St. Louis, who wired a pass across the slot to Pineau for the one-timer to beat Crimson goaltender Derek Mullahy (25 saves).

Tyler Kopff doubled Brown’s lead less than 90 seconds later after Harvard’s Casey Severo was whistled for hooking. The freshman collected a pass from St. Louis on the goal line and bounced a puck through traffic past Mullahy for his third of the season. Ethan Mistry picked up the secondary assist on the goal.

Brown goaltender Lawton Zacher (24 saves) turned aside all three shots faced in the opening 20 minutes.

Joe Miller cut into Brown’s lead with a power play goal eight minutes into the second period. Harvard’s leading scorer blasted a one-timer from the top of the left circle off a feed from Ryan Healey to beat Zacher.

Matt Sutton turned a Crimson defensive turnover into a 3-1 lead with his second goal of the season 14:09 into the middle frame. Brendan Clark and Ryan Bottrill swarmed the Harvard defense to force the giveaway and pick up the assists on the senior’s goal….
