NASHVILLE – Seven Canadiens hopefuls were in action during the quarterfinals of the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship on Monday.
Latvia 5 – Austria 2
After leading 2-1 – thanks to Vinzenz Rohrer – Austria unfortunately lost again. Used for over 23 minutes, Rohrer scored on his sole shot of the game, finishing the tilt with a plus-1 differential. The Austrian captain scored from a sharp angle to defeat Latvia’s netminder between the pads.
Finland 2 – Sweden 3
It only took 3:10 for Oliver Kapanen to score his second goal of the tournament. The 2021 second-round pick buried a rebound to the left of Swedish netminder Carl Lindbom to get the Finns on the board first.
Captain Kapanen led all forwards in ice time at 19:32, had four shots on goal and registered a minus-1 differential. Despite Finland’s 1-0 and 2-1 leads, the Swedes found a way to win 3-2.
Defenseman Adam Engstrom, selected by the bleu-blanc-rouge in the 2022 NHL Draft, totaled one shot on goal in 20:32 spent on the ice for Sweden.
USA 11 – Germany 1
The Americans scored five goals in the second period en route to a dominant win and a spot in the semi-final. In 16:08 on the ice, blueliner Lane Hutson recorded an assist, a plus-1 differential and three shots on goal.
Canada 4 – Slovakia 3 (OT)
A little over five minutes of overtime were necessary to determine that Canadians Joshua Roy and Owen Beck will move on in the tournament. The latter played his first game of the World Junior Championship after receiving an invitation to join the team yesterday to replace Colton Dach – Kirby’s brother – who is injured and will not return to the event.
Roy had three shots on goal and a Time On Ice of 20:24, while Beck, listed as a 13th forward, only played two shifts, totaling 1:41 of play.
On the other end of the ice, assistant captain Filip Mesar set up the equalizer for Slovakia in the third period, forcing overtime. The forward protected the puck along the boards before sending a pass to teammate Libor Nemec, stationed in front of goaltender Thomas Milic.
Mesar posted a helper and two shots on goal in 19:37 of ice time.
