ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Oh, sweep victory! The No. 13 Arizona State hockey team (13-8-1, 8-4-0 NCHC) completed its second consecutive road sweep as it defeated No. 15 St. Cloud State (11-11-0, 4-8-0 NCHC), 5-3, on Saturday night at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
The sweep gave ASU all six conference points that were up for grabs this weekend. The Sun Devils continue their sole possession of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference with 25 points through 12 conference games. ASU is one point ahead of Western Michigan and two points ahead of Omaha.
After a 1-1 tie game through two periods, ASU exploded offensively during a five-minute power play that saw three different skaters score to take a 4-1 lead. SCSU attempted a comeback with two goals of its own late in the third period before a huge effort by goaltender Gibson Homer and an empty net goal secured the 5-3 win for ASU.
Ryan Kirwan was credited with the game-winning goal, his third of the weekend to finish with four points and a combined plus/minus of +4. His 14 goals on the year leads the NCHC and is tied for 10th in the nation.
