Box Score Ann Arbor, Mich. . – Garrett Shifsky scored a minute into overtime to score a 3-2 win over top-ranked Michigan State on Friday night in Ann Arbor. It was MSU’s first loss in 10 games, as the Spartans fall to 18-3-2.
The Wolverines twice battled back from one-goal deficits, with regulation scores in the second and third periods. Karsen Dorwart scored two minutes into the game, and then set up Joey Larson eight minutes into the third period to break a 1-1 deadlock. Michigan scored in the second period and got an equalizing tally from TJ Hughes with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. The Wolverines had a 13-10 edge in third-period shots and then had two attempts in OT, with the second one finding its mark.
Trey Augustine made 29 saves on the night, and Logan Stein made 35, with an additional 16 blocked shots coming from his defense.
The teams will play on Saturday night at Munn Ice Arena to finish the weekend set. Game time is 7:30 pm, with the game airing live on Big Ten Network.
STATISTICS OF NOTE
- The Spartan had its nine game unbeaten streak snapped, (7-1-2) dating back to Dec.7
- This was MSU’s first loss in overtime in six tries this season (3-1-2). It was MSU’s second straight OT contest, and fifth OT game in as many B1G series.
- The Spartans were playing their tenth game of the last 11 away from Munn Ice Arena. Tomorrow’s game at Munn is just the second since Dec. 1.
- Karsen Dorwart scored his seventh of the season and added a primary assist on the Larson score in the third period.
