The San Diego Gulls fell short to the Calgary Wranglers tonight 4-3.
Jan Mysak scored the first goal of the game shorthanded, his third career shorthanded tally and his second goal and third point of the season. Calgary scored soon after with a goal from Lucas Ciona.
Roland McKeown also earned a shorthanded goal in the first period, assisted by Ryan Carpenter and Pavol Regenda. It marks the sixth time in Gulls AHL history that they have scored multiple shorthanded goals in a single game and fourth time in a single period.
The Wranglers instantly caught up, with a power play goal from Jeremie Poirier.
Shortly before the end of the first period, Regenda scored on a faceoff play with an assist from Coulson Pitre from the dot. The first period ended seeing the Gulls leading 3-2.
“We know we have a strong team,” Regenda said. “We proved it. I think we prove it every game, every day, every game, getting better. We just have to stick with it.”
The second period flipped the game for Calgary, as they netted two goals, bringing the score to 4-3.
No goals were scored by either team in the third period. It marks the third time this season Calgary has taken the win against San Diego.
“Every guy here is improving every day,” Regenda said. “I think we’re getting better and better. We have a young team. We have to create those opportunities for us to get a good scoring chance…I think that’s a main point, stick with a plan. Everybody’s trying their best.”
The Gulls will hit the road this week to challenge the Coachella Valley Firebirds this Friday night (7 p.m. PST).
