Sprong Returns; Kraken Win 3-2 Over Islanders

Seattle, WA – The Seattle Kraken defeated the New York Islanders 3-2 in a Saturday matinee at Climate Pledge Arena, the first of two meetings and the only one in Seattle.

Players to Watch: Forward Daniel Sprong returned to the Kraken after being acquired from the Vancouver Canucks earlier this month for future considerations. Also in the lineup was former expansion draftee Dennis Cholowski. Ben Meyers was called up from Coachella and participated in warmups but was a healthy scratch for the game. Speaking to the media before puck drop, head coach Dan Bylsma said, “Ben has been doing very well in Coachella and brings versatility.”

Scratches: Islanders had several players sitting out due to injuries including: Onetime Seattle Thunderbirds captain Mat Barzal, winger Anthony Duclair both with lower body injuries. Defender Mike Reilly (concussion) and defenseman Adam Pelech and Alexander Romanov.

Seattle’s captain, Jordan Eberle, was scratched due to an injury sustained Thursday against the Blackhawks. Andre Burakovsky joined Jared McCann and Matty Beniers on his line.

The Kraken scored first with a deflected shot from Yanni Gourde off Islander’s goalie Ilya Sorokin giving Gourde his first goal of the season.

The Islanders tied the game before the end of the period with a goal of their own. Pierre Engvall scored with a wrist shot past Kraken goalie Joey Daccord, assisted by Ryan Pulock and Dennis Cholowski.

In the third period, Brock Nelson gave the Islanders a 2-1 lead with a wrist shot past Daccord. Jared McCann extended his point streak, tying the game 2-2. McCann has recorded seven points (4G/3A) in a row!

Jamie Oleksiak scored the game winning goal with a slap shot.

Yanni Gourde tallied his second point of the night with an assist to Oleksiak, while Brandon Tanev extended his point streak to four games, totaling six points (4G/2A). Joey Daccord stopped 22 of 24 shots, in his first matchup win against the Islanders and clinching the Kraken’s fourth straight victory.
