Badgers suffer first loss of the season in 3-2 battle to Ohio State

St. Thomas

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 1 Wisconsin women’s hockey team suffered their first defeat of the 2024-25 campaign falling 3-2 to No. 2 Ohio State at the OSU Ice Arena on Saturday.

Wisconsin (13-1-0, 9-1-0 WCHA) scored twice on the power play, but the Buckeyes (12-3-2, 7-3-2 WCHA) found an answer to seal the series split in Ohio.

Ohio State took the lead in the first period scoring two goals in the first eleven minutes of the game. The Badgers got a goal back before the end of the period. On the power play, Casey O’Brien sent a one-timer on net that didn’t make it through, but Kirsten Simms managed to find the back of the net on the rebound.

Neither team managed to light the lamp in the second period. McNaughton stopped all 14 shots she faced in the second period to keep the Badgers within one.

The Buckeyes scored shorthanded in the third period to extend their lead to 3-1. Wisconsin answered less than half a minute later as Maggie Scannell continued her impressive freshman season with her sixth goal of the season. Scannell tucked in the rebound on a shot in from Cassie Hall to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Despite pulling McNaughton for the extra attacker with just under two minutes remaining, Wisconsin couldn’t find the equalizer and the game ended 3-2.
