What you need to know about Spartan Hockey

•  The all-time series record between MSU and Notre Dame sits at 73-59-16 in favor of the Spartans, which includes a 41-23-5 mark in games played in East Lansing.  Jeff Jackson is in his 20th season as the Notre Dame mentor, and is 19-28-8 against the Spartans in his 20 years at Notre Dame.  The Irish are 5-5 on the year, and 1-3 in Big Ten play, which includes last weekend’s sweep at the hands of Michigan.

• At 7-1-0, Michigan State is off to its best start since the 2007-08 campaign when it started 8-1-0.  Last Saturday’s win over Ohio State was Adam Nightingale‘s 50th as the head coach of the Spartans – he is the fastest to 50 head coaching victories in program history (85 games); Rick Comley won his 50th game in his 88th contest early in 2004-05.

•   Trey Augustine was named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week on Tuesday.  He was masterful in the sweep of OSU last weekend (4-2, 4-1), stopping 51 of 54 shots.  Augustine shares the Big Ten lead in games played (7), owns more victories than any other goalie in the league (6), and boasts a 1.57 GAA (third B1G/ 13th nationally) and .941 save percentage (fourth B1G/12th nationally).

Daniel Russell owns the team lead in goals (6), including his two scores in the Ohio State series.  He had his first career shorthanded goal on Friday (the game-winner) and Saturday’s empty-net tally that sealed the series sweep.  He leads the Big Ten in goals per game (0.75, eighth nationally) and leads the country in game-winners, with four.  His +9 is a team best, is fourth in the B1G, and tied for 11th nationally.

•  Sophomore defenseman Maxim Štrbák is tied for the team lead in assists  (5) with Isaac Howard, which is more than half of the nine points (1-8-9) he finished with as a freshman.  The sophomore is a +5 with 12 blocked shots in eight games.  Howard had a goal and an assist in last Saturday’s game against Ohio State to keep him atop the team in points (10).
