Spartans Win Big Ten Opener, Down OSU 4-2

Buffalo, NY.  –   No. 4/3 Michigan State opened Big Ten play with a 4-2 victory over No. 13/12 Ohio State on Friday at Munn Ice Arena.   It was the first loss of the season for the Buckeyes, who fall to 7-1-1 and 2-1-0 in Conference action.   
 
The Spartans (6-1, 1-0 B1G) took a 3-0 lead less than a minute into the second period and limited the visitors to 13 shots on goal through the first 50 minutes of the game. 
 
Nicklas Andrews and Red Savage scored first-period goals and Daniel Russell scored a shorthanded marker less than a minute into the second.  The Buckeyes made it a 3-1 game in the final four minutes of the second on a goal by Davis Burnside.
 
OSU outshot the Spartans 11-2 over the final 10 minutes, and cut the MSU lead to 3-2 on a goal by Patrick Guzzo after a defensive-zone turnover.  However, Trey Augustine was up to the task with 13 of his 22 saves in the final period. 
 
MSU iced the game with an empty-net tally by David Gucciardi at 18:06 after the senior blueliner came up with a huge blocked shot and sent the puck the length of the ice.
 
Goalie Logan Terness made 23 saves but picked up his first loss of the season.
 
The Spartans are back on the ice against Ohio State on Saturday.  Puck drop at Munn is at 6 pm.
