Ty Young is on his way to the AHL. The 20-year-old goaltender was re-assigned from the Kalamazoo Wings to the Abbotsford Canucks by the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday morning and will be available to play in the AHL this weekend. Through two starts in the ECHL, Young has a 1-1-0 record and has allowed just two goals on 76 shots.

Young’s call-up could indicate that Jiří Patera will miss some time with an injury. Patera left Wednesday’s game against the Ontario Reign during the first period and did not return. Patera has been splitting starts with Nikita Tolopilo for the AHL Canucks this season, posting a 2-2-2 record and a .899 save percentage.

For Young, this is a great opportunity to show that he is ready for a full-time job in the AHL. After a successful WHL career, the 2022 fifth-round pick turned pro this season and has carried his momentum from a strong Training Camp into the ECHL season. Young is one of six goaltenders signed by Vancouver and is one of two goaltending prospects the organization has who are 21 and younger.

Abbotsford has a busy weekend ahead with back-to-back games against the Bakersfield Condors. In 2023-24, the AHL Canucks picked up points in seven of eight meetings with the Condors, posting a head-to-head record of 5-1-3. Abbotsford is 5-5-1 to start 2024-25, but have been outscored 39-30 in 11 games. Puck drop on Saturday is scheduled for 7:00 pm PT, while Sunday is a 4:00 pm PT start, with both games taking place at the Abbotsford Centre.
