No. 12/13 Women’s Hockey Downs Stonehill, 11-1 in Ice Breaker Finale – Penn State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 12/13 Penn State women’s ice hockey team capped off the 2024 Women’s Ice Breaker Tournament with a rousing 11-1 victory over Stonehill on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions fired 65 shots on goal and had eight players score at least one goal in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • A steal by the Nittany Lions at center ice led Grace Outwater to power through the Stonehill defense as she fired a goal from the slot to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead with 10:04 left in the first period.
  • Then pair of assists by Alyssa Machado and Tessa Janecke came to Outwater as she stood in front of the Stonehill netminder and then fired a goal to put the Nittany Lions ahead 2-0 with 6:01 remaining in the first frame.
  • Less than five minutes into the second frame, Karolina Hengelmüller received a feed from Katelyn Roberts and then Hengelmüller fired her first goal of the season from the left circle to put Penn State ahead 3-0 with 15:35 left in the period.
  • Shortly after the Hengelmüller goal, Maddy Christian found the back of the net off a rebounded shot by Tiffany Hill to put the Nittany Lions ahead 4-0 with 14:47 remaining in the second period.
  • With 12:15 left in the frame Stonehill would score a short-handed goal off the stick of Mia Kenmore as she drove the puck up from the opposite end of the ice and scored to narrow the Penn State lead to 4-1.
  • A couple of feeds by Katelyn Roberts and Tessa Janecke behind the net came to stick of Stella Retrum as she would fire her first goal of the game in front of the goalie to put the Nittany Lions ahead 5-1 with 2:47 remaining in the second period.
  • Then with 1:47 left in the period, Brianna Brooks fired a power-play goal from behind the far-left circle to put the Nittany Lions ahead 6-1.
  • Lyndie Lobdell fired a pass from the Penn State defensive zone that landed on the stick of Machado at center ice, and then she drove the puck to the slot. She then fed it to Nicole Hall in front of the goalie as she fired a goal to put the Nittany Lions ahead 7-1 with 17:36 remaining in the third period.
  • With 17:09 left in the third frame, Outwater would feed Brooks a pass from behind the net and Brooks fired her second goal of the game from the slot to put the Nittany Lions ahead 8-1.
  • Maddy Christian would find Abby Stonehouse as she fired a pass from the left circle to Stonehouse in the slot and then fired a goal off a backhanded shot to put the Nittany Lions ahead 9-1 with 11:29 remaining the period.
