SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – It was the first game of the ECAC season for Harvard women’s ice hockey, who traveled to New York to take on the Union Garnet Chargers. The Crimson (1-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC) battled to the finish but was handed its first loss of the season by the Garnet Chargers (3-6-0, 1-0-0 ECAC).
How it Happened
- The Crimson made its way to Messa Rink to take on the Union Garnet Chargers in the 41st meeting between the two sides in program history.
- After the puck was dropped the Crimson immediately applied pressure, generating a trio of shots on target in the opening two minutes. After the Harvard surge, Union swung back with a counterattack but a pair of saves from Emily Davidson and two blocked shots helped Harvard hold off Union.
- After a fast start, both sides settled in on the defensive end. The pace of play remained fast as the puck went back and forth down the ice with only one faceoff taking place in a 12-minute span.
- Maria Pape and Mia Biotti both had good looks on net turned aside in the first period, making up a pair of the Crimson’s five shots on net in the first period.
- Union put a tally on the board late in the first period to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
- Each team had a powerplay chance early in the second period with Union going on the skater advantage first. Harvard did not allow a single shot to reach Davidson to kill off the penalty. On its own powerplay opportunity, the Crimson generated a pair of scoring…
