PHENOMENAL FINK
Sophomore Aiden Fink enters the weekend with points in each game this season including back-to-back multi-point efforts. Fink’s seven points rank second in the Big Ten and tied for 10th nationally while his 2.33 points per game production paces the conference and ranks second nationally. Fink’s six assists are also tied for the conference lead and tied for fifth in the nation.
SPECIAL SUCCESS
Penn State is one of nine teams and the lone Big Ten squad to be perfect on the penalty kill through the first three weeks of the season as the Nittany Lions are a perfect 16-for-16.
The Nittany Lion powerplay has also connected in back-to-back games and is 2-for-9 (22.2 percent) on the year to rank second in the Big Ten and tied for 16th in the nation.
OH DANNY BOY, DANNY BOY
Senior forward Danny Dzhaniyev, the shortest player in college hockey standing just 5’5” tall, set career-highs across the board last year finishing second on the team with 29 points including a team-best 20 assists.
Dzhaniyev ended the 2023-24 campaign with points in five-straight games to tie his career-best mark and has picked up right where he left off with points in each of the first three games, goals in two, this season to stretch his now new career-long point-streak to eight games.
GO SHORTY, IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY
The Nittany Lions are one of just four teams to score multiple shorthanded goals this season as both Braedon Ford and Dane Dowiak lit the lamp during the PK in back-to-back nights in Alaska to start the season. ASU and Michigan lead the nation with three shorty’s to Penn State’s two, UConn also has two shorthanded tallies this season.
The Alaska series marked the first time since the Three Rivers Classic in December 2015 that the Nittany Lions recorded shorthanded tallies in back-to-back games. Penn State had just one shorthanded goal last season and prior to the start of 2024-25 had registered just six shorty’s since the start of the 2019-20 season.
Penn State’s single-season record for shorthanded tallies came during the 2015-16 season when the Nittany Lions potted 12.
THE GOLDEN GOAL
Senior Simon Mack tallied the game-winning goal in overtime for the Nittany Lions in their season opener in Alaska marking the first OT win for Penn State in over a year dating back to a 2-1 victory against Ohio State during the Big Ten Quarterfinals on March 4, 2023.
