KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team dominated York on Saturday night at Lawson Arena, defeating the Lions by a final score of 8-0.
The Broncos got two goals from Matteo Costantini, while Tim Washe, Tristan Lemyre, Owen Michaels, Zach Nehring, Cole Crusberg-Roseen and Zack Sharp all lit the lamp once. Hampton Slukynsky and Cameron Rowe combined for a 16-save shutout.
FIRST PERIOD
It didn’t take long for the WMU offense to get going, as Iiro Hakkarainen intercepted a York pass and pushed the puck ahead to Washe. He lit the lamp to put the Brown and Gold in front 1-0 just under seven minutes into the game.
The floodgates opened from there, with Lemyre firing a wrister by Lions goaltender Carter Serhyenko for a 2-0 lead not even nine minutes into the contest. After York killed off a pair of penalties, WMU was able to tally another goal.
This time, Michaels got the puck from Grant Slukynsky and lit the lamp for a third WMU goal with under seven minutes to play in the period. About three minutes later, Nehring scored for the Broncos to make it 4-0 in the first frame. WMU carried that lead into the second 20 minutes of action.
SECOND PERIOD
The Broncos’ offense wouldn’t slow down there, as Costantini got a great crossing pass from Brian Kramer and tipped it into the back of the net. WMU’s lead grew to 5-0 with just over 10 minutes to play in the second frame.
With under four minutes to play in the second period, Western Michigan found an offensive spark, getting a Crusberg-Roseen blast to find the back of the net. That made it 6-0. Moments later, Costantini scored his second…
