Badgers win three WCHA player of the week awards

MADISON, Wis. – Three members of the Wisconsin women’s hockey team earned WCHA Player of the Week awards for their performances against Minnesota Duluth this past weekend, the WCHA announced on Monday.

Laila Edwards received the WCHA Forward of the Week award, Laney Potter earned WCHA Defender of the Week honors while freshman Maggie Scannell was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week.

Edwards and Potter are the third-straight Badgers to receive the weekly awards in their respective categories after Casey O’Brien and Caroline Harvey won the two previous weeks’ awards. Scannell is the first Wisconsin rookie to be recognized for a weekly award this season.

Edwards posted two goals and two assists in the sweep of No. 3 UMD this past weekend. The junior forward had a goal and an assist in both games, including an NCAA-leading second shorthanded goal of the season on Sunday. The Cleveland Heights, Ohio, native’s four points were tied for the most by a WCHA skater while her two goals were the second-most in the WCHA.

Edwards is tied for third nationally with one goal per game and tied for third nationally with two power-play goals through the first six games of the season.

Potter notched two goals and two assists from the blueline in this weekend’s wins against Minnesota Duluth. The sophomore defender’s four point performance was tied for the most among WCHA skaters and blueliners. Potter’s two goals through the weekend were the most by any league defender.

The Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, native leads all Badger defenders in plus/minus with +13 alongside fellow defender Caroline Harvey. Potter put together her second career two-goal game on Saturday after earning her first pair of goals in her freshman season. Saturday’s game was also a career-high three point game for the defender.

Scannell found two goals and assists in the two-game series against No. 3 UMD. Sunday’s two-goal performance was both the freshman’s first NCAA two-game performance and first collegiate multi-point game. The Wynantskill, New York, native also added an assist in game one of the series on Saturday. Scannell’s three points were tied for the most by a WCHA rookie during the weekend.

The three award winners and the No. 1 Badgers hit the road this week to face No. 3 Minnesota this Friday and Saturday at Ridder Arena in the Twin Cities. Fans can watch…
