Badgers beat Bulldogs for third-straight series sweep

MADISON, Wis. – Six different Badgers lit the lamp to help the No. 1 Wisconsin women’s hockey team to a 7-3 victory over the No. 3 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs on Sunday at LaBahn Arena in Madison.

Maggie Scannell scored twice, while Lacey Eden, Marianne Picard, Caroline Harvey, Cassie Hall and Laila Edwards found the back of the net once. The Badgers improved their conference record to 2-0-0 and overall record to 6-0-0. 

Eden opened the scoring for the Badgers seven minutes into the first period. The Bulldog’s goaltender saved Emma Venusio’s shot from the point but Eden pounced on the loose puck and tapped it into the back of the net. UMD equalized with just over five minutes to play in the first period to send the game into the first intermission tied at one.

The Badgers scored three back-to-back goals to extend their lead to 4-1 in the second period. Hannah Halverson sped through the Bulldogs’ defenders and passed it back to Scannell, who drilled it into the back of the net. The Badgers’ second goal of the period came on some quick passing in the offensive zone. Vivian Jungels passed to Harvey, who sent a long pass over to Picard, who fired a screened shot into the back of the net.

Harvey scored on the power play for the Badgers’ third goal of the period and fourth of the game. Casey O’Brien passed it to a wide-open Harvey at the point, who took her time and drilled a snipe into the top corner. The Bulldogs closed the gap to two late in the second period with a power-play goal of their own to end the period 4-2.
