Two Skaters Impress in Week 1, Earn NCHC Player of the Week Honors

TEMPE, Ariz. – Two Arizona State ice hockey skaters earned Player of the Week nods from the National Collegiate Hockey Conference after the opening weekend at Air Force. Junior forward Bennett Schimek and graduate defensemen Noah Beck won the KJ Branding NCHC Forward and Defenseman of the Week, respectively. Additionally, they are the first players in Sun Devil history to earn performance recognition from the conference.

Schimek notched a six-point weekend in a split at Air Force, including his first career hat-trick in an 8-1 victory.

In Friday’s win, Schimek netted his first two goals while the Sun Devils were short-handed. The Providence transfer also dished out the lone assist on freshman Cullen Potter’s first career goal. His third tally later came on the power play to put ASU up, 7-1, bringing him to four points (3G, 1A) on the night.

In Saturday’s contest, Schimek stayed red hot, scoring just 27 seconds into the game. He also picked up an assist on what was Ryan Kirwan’s go-ahead goal at the 19:01 mark. Schimek ended his weekend with four goals, two assists, six shots on goal and a +3 plus/minus.

Beck was named NCHC Defenseman of the Week after his stellar weekend on both ends of the ice, collecting five points and a +5 plus/minus.

In Friday’s win, the Clarkson transfer paced the team with three assists on the night, including the lone assist on Bennett Schimek’s first short-handed goal in both of their maroon and gold debuts.
