Cal Falls To No. 3 Virginia in Charlottesville, 4-3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va – The California field hockey team fell to No. 3 Virginia, 4-3, on Friday at Turf Field, snapping its four-game winning streak to begin the season.

After a scoreless opening period, the action began to pick up in the second period. Freshman Liz Klompmaker scored her sixth goal of the season and first of the day early in the frame to even the score at 1-1.

Virginia began to pull away after scoring two goals during the first five minutes of the second half to take a 3-1 lead. The Cavaliers continued to extend their lead in the fourth quarter after scoring their final goal in the 48th minute of the game.

The Golden Bears made one last push after freshman Maya Hoepfner drained her second goal of the season late in the game off assists by freshman Pauline Lingnau and graduate student Canisha van Duyn. In the final minute, Klompmaker scored her second goal of the evening to cut the deficit to 4-3. van Duyn and Lingnau assisted on the play.

The Bears had a total of seven corners and seven saves, six of which came from junior Tina Jolly.

Cal returns to action on Sunday against James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va., at 9:00 a.m. PT.
