Blue Jackets' Johnny Gaudreau, brother confirmed dead

American hockey star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew have died after an “unimaginable tragedy,” the Columbus Blue Jackets confirmed in a social media post on Friday.

The team confirmed the death of the brothers in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

New Jersey State Police told CBS News in Philadelphia that the Gaudreau brothers were killed in a crash Thursday night in Salem County, N.J.

The duo were riding bicycles when they were struck by the driver of a Jeep, who was attempting to pass a slower vehicle when the crash occurred.

The driver remained on the scene and is now in police custody.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman also released a statement about Johnny Gaudreau’s passing, saying that  “he was more than just a dazzling hockey player; he was a doting father and beloved husband, son, brother and teammate who endeared himself to every person fortunate enough to have crossed his path.”

Johnny Gaudreau was 31, Matthew Gaudreau was 29.

More to come.
