The Tennessee State men’s hockey jerseys were unveiled recently on social media, and coach Duante’ Abercrombie was happy with the buzz that was created.

“It’s been phenomenal. The response from NHL people, people on a national level all the way down to people I grew up with calling me saying, ‘Duante’, that jersey is phenomenal,’ ” Abercrombie said. “I just got two messages from friends saying they just ordered two jerseys, ‘I just wanted to say keep crushing it. Former vice mayor Howard Gentry Jr., a longtime TSU radio analyst, also has been seen wearing one of the uniforms around town.

“I appreciate the buzz but don’t be surprised when it continues to grow,” Abercrombie said. “I definitely won’t be.”

The unveiling of the uniform was the latest step in the evolution of the hockey program, which Allen first announced in 2023 following a feasibility study conducted in 2021.

“I’ve been saying this since day one, there’s a lot of people that weren’t sure hockey at an HBCU and at…
