DULUTH — New Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey coach Laura Schuler
received a five-year contract from the university
with a base salary that starts at $215,000 for the 2024-25 season. It reaches $251,500 by 2028-29.
Schuler’s 2024-25 base salary is more than what both of her predecessors made in their final seasons as head coach of the Bulldogs women’s hockey program, but less than her counterparts in the WCHA who work for Big Ten institutions.
Shannon Miller, who led UMD to five NCAA championships in her 16 seasons, had a base salary of $207,000 her final season in 2014-15 before not receiving another contract and being dismissed.
Maura Crowell, who took the Bulldogs to five NCAA tournaments and two NCAA Frozen Fours in nine seasons, had a base salary of $200,000 in 2024-25 before leaving to become the head coach at Dartmouth.
Per the most recent contract extension Crowell signed in the spring of 2021,
her base salary was scheduled to increase to $205,000 in 2024-25 and $215,000 in 2025-26, which was the final year of her current contract.
Miller was believed to be the highest-paid coach in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey at the time of her ousting from UMD. Since then, salaries have increased throughout the WCHA, especially at the Big Ten schools.
Wisconsin head coach Mark Johnson, the winningest coach in NCAA Division I women’s hockey, had a base salary of $385,435 in 2023-24
according to his 2022 contract extension.
He’s won seven NCAA titles in his 20 years as coach of the Badgers.
Ohio State coach Nadine Muzerall, who has led the Buckeyes to two NCAA titles in the last three seasons,
had a reported base salary of $274,300 in 2023-24.
