MARSHFIELD, Mass.—The Babson College men’s ice hockey program had 14 players recognized for their success in the classroom when the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) announced its Academic All-Conference team late last week.
Seniors Colby Bailey (Southborough, Mass.) and Grey Owens (Greenwich, Conn.) and juniors Matt Cormier (Waltham, Mass.), Wyatt George (Mount Lebanon, Pa.) and Brendan Murphy (Arlington, Mass.) were all honored for the second year in a row. Senior Thomas Kramer (Bridgewater, Mass.), junior Michael Holland (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomores Charlie Andriole (Branford, Conn.), Danny Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.), Will Holland (Charlotte, N.C.), Brendan Kennedy (Georgetown, Ontario), Nate Mueller (Rogers, Minn.), Ryan Murphy (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) and Egan Schmitt (Schuylerville, N.Y.) were all named to the squad for the first time in their respective careers.
To be eligible for All-Academic recognition a student must carry a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA and have completed one full year at their current institution by the beginning of the hockey season. A total of 166 student-athletes from 10 institutions were recognized by the NEHC.
Ryan Murphy scored eight goals and led the Beavers with 16 assists and 24 points in 26 games last winter. George (10g-8a-18 pts) and Schmitt (10-5-15) tied for the team lead in goals, Kramer totaled six goals and nine assists for 15 points in 25 games, and Bailey led all Babson defensemen in scoring with four goals and a career-high 11 assists for a career-best 15 points.
Mueller went 7-6 with a 3.10 goals against average, a .900 save percentage and one shutout in 13 starts between the pipes, while Kennedy (2-13-15) and Andriole (0-13-13) tied for second on the team in assists. Cormier (6-5-11) set a new career-high in goals, Will Holland (3-7-10) scored twice on the power play and Cavanagh produced three goals despite being limited to just 14 games due to injury.
Owens (0-1-1) appeared in 22 contests on defense, while Brendan Murphy (0-1-1) and Michael Holland both saw action in seven games after both missing the first two months of the year because of injury.
