Utica welcomes hockey teams to town

With the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championship less than two weeks away, preparation has reached what event organizers are calling “a fever pitch.”

On Monday, tournament flagpole banners were installed across Utica to welcome players and officials of the 10 competing teams, as well as fans attending the upcoming event.

The banners, sponsored by Oneida County, will be gradually installed along Oriskany Street and Genesee Street, from the Thruway to the Adirondack Bank Center, where all 29 games will be played, officials said.

“The moment we all have been waiting for is just around the corner, and you can feel the anticipation building around the City and across Oneida County,” Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. said, in a statement. “Today we take another step in adding to the excitement as we roll out the welcome mat for players, officials and fans from around the world by hanging banners around the city.”

The event marks the fifth time the U.S. has hosted the tournament, the last event was in 2017 when the games were held in Plymouth, Mich. Other host cities have included Lake Placid, NY (1994), Minneapolis, Minn. (2001), and Burlington, Vt. (2012).

The statement said an estimated 60,000 fans will watch and participate in the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championship.

Utica Comets Director of Marketing Michael Lehr noted the building only holds 4,000 seats and three of the games have already sold out. Tickets for other preliminary games, quarterfinals, and semifinals are still available, Lehr said.

Fans can buy tickets online or in person at the Adirondack Bank Center box office, open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
