ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College NCAA men’s hockey team served as host of the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals where they faced St. Norbert College on Saturday night. Saturday marked the fourth time this season that the Bulldogs and the Green Knights faced off as they split their regular season series at St. Norbert before the Green Knights defeated Adrian in the Harris Cup Finals. Adrian came away with a 5-3 victory on Saturday night to advance to the Frozen Four for the third consecutive year.
St. Norbert struck first 14 seconds into the game off the opening faceoff to lead 1-0. Later in the period, Ian Amsbaugh put the Bulldogs on the board to take a 1-1 score into the first intermission.
The second period was filled with scoring as Adrian jumped out to a 3-1 lead. Matt Couto scored a goal for the Bulldogs followed by a power-play goal from Zachary Heintz. St. Norbert responded with two goals within 14 seconds of each other with one on the power play. With two seconds to go in the period, Riley Murphy gave Adrian a 4-3 lead entering the second intermission.
In the third period, the Adrian penalty kill held strong by killing two St. Norbert power plays. With just under 1:30 left in the third period, St. Norbert pulled its goaltender putting an extra attacker on the ice. With 15 seconds left, Riley Murphy netted an empty net goal to lock in the 5-3 victory.
Dershahn Stewart started in goal for Adrian where he picked up the win with a 29-save night.
Adrian will move on to the Frozen Four and face Trinity College…
