BILLERICA – The Westfield High School boys ice hockey team’s state postseason run was short-lived as the 27th seeded Bombers fell to No. 6 Billerica, 4-1, in a Massachusetts Division 2 tournament Round of 32 contest late Wednesday.
Billerica (10-7-2) scored three unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the Western Mass champs.
“We gave it our all,” Westfield boys ice hockey head coach Dave Pelletier said. “We played a solid two periods and ran out of gas.
Westfield (12-12) held Billerica to just one goal through the game’s first 33-plus minutes.
Billerica’s Cam Penti scored the first goal of the game just 1:39 into the first period off passes from Ryan Johnson and Shawn Tierney. Westfield battled back, scoring with 4:34 remaining in the period on a shot from Jared Ritter. Francis Powers assisted on the Bombers goal.
Billerica changed the tide the third period, scoring three goals within the span of just six minutes, 21 seconds. John Taft scored the eventual game-winning goal 3:26 into the period. Danny Viscione and Nolan Dawson assisted. Less than two minutes later, Tierney added an insurance goal. And just for good measure, with 5:13 left, A.J. Parrella padded the home team’s lead for good.
Billerica moves on to face the winner of No. 11 Boston Latin (13-8)-No. 22 Westwood (12-7-1).
