Hunt, Wallin pile on the points as UMD sweeps St. Thomas - Duluth News Tribune

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. — Minnesota Duluth didn’t need Reece Hunt to do all the scoring on Saturday night. Turns out the Bulldogs had plenty of help outscoring St. Thomas.

UMD got five goals from five players to beat the Tommies 5-1 and sweep their WCHA weekend series. Hunt was one of them, scoring her fifth goal of the weekend to break a 1-1 tie 5:36 into the second period.

Olivia Wallin, who set up

Hunt for three of her four goals

in Friday’s series opener, continued to rough up the St. Thomas defense, adding a goal and two assists to her three points from Friday for a six-point weekend.

Katie Davis opened the scoring with her first goal

since a long injury layoff

when she tipped in a point shot from Hanna Baskin at 9:12 of the first period, but the Tommies canceled it out with a goal from ex-Bulldog Brieja Parent about eight minutes later.

Hunt put UMD back into the lead by successfully getting to the net to bury a centering pass from Mannon McMahon 5:36 into the second period.

The Bulldogs largely iced their three points with goals 100 seconds apart late in the period. First, Nina Jobst-Smith buried a wrister from the right circle for a power play goal with four minutes to intermission, and then Jenna Lawry made it 4-1 when she finished a three-on-two rush by shooting for herself. Wallin then scored on the doorstep late to finish off the win.

Eve Gascon made 23 saves on 24 shots to earn the goaltending victory.

The Bulldogs (17-11-2, 14-10-0 WCHA) will host St. Cloud State for a two-game series starting on Friday needing just one win to ensure a top-half WCHA finish and that the playoff series between the two a fortnight later will be in Duluth.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
