UMD's Hunt scores four on St. Thomas - Duluth News Tribune

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. — Minnesota Duluth’s Reece Hunt was all her Bulldogs team needed on Friday night.

The graduate transfer scored all UMD’s goals in a 4-1 WCHA victory over St. Thomas at the St. Thomas Ice Rink. The standout performance is Hunt’s second hat trick of the season (

Jan. 13 vs. Bemidji State

) and UMD’s second four-goal game of the year (

Mannon McMahon vs. Long Island on Oct. 6

).

Hunt got it started by poking in a centering pass from behind the goal line by Clara Van Wieren late in the first period. Van Wieren played a major part in the evening, assisting Hunt’s second goal by hitting her with a pass as she cut to the net, then scored on her own rebound. The third goal was a one-timer Hunt banked in off the inside of the goalie’s leg, again from Van Wieren, and the fourth came on a 2-on-1 with Olivia Wallin.

UMD carried a 4-1 lead into the third period, which was scoreless.

UMD goaltender Hailey MacLeod had just one blemish on her record, which included 23 saves.

UMD (16-11-2, 13-10-0 WCHA) extended its lead to five points over fifth-place St. Cloud State (which lost 1-0 to Minnesota) for the last home ice spot for the first round of the WCHA playoffs.

The Bulldogs and Tommies meet again Saturday night at 6.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
