BRUNSWICK, ME. – With the lone goal of the night, Owen Sweet ’25 scored his fourth goal of the season to lead the Wesleyan men’s ice hockey team in a 2-1 overtime loss to Bowdoin College on Friday night from Bowdoin’s Sidney J. Watson Arena.
Sweet struck with just over five and a half minutes remaining in the first period to give the Cardinals (3-8-1 overall, 2-4-1 NESCAC) the early lead against the 9-3-1 Polar Bears (5-2-1 NESCAC). DJ Dixon ’24 earned the assist as he and Sweet were able to beat the Bears’ defense back into their own zone. Dixon skated the puck all the way into the goal line, making a back pass to Sweet out center of the goal. Hitting one knee on the ice, Sweet’s one-timer bounced off the post and behind Alex Kozic.
The Cardinals defense held the Bears scoreless for another 42 minutes, through the second period and down to the wire of the third. Bryce Bollman tied the game up at one at 2:39 to send the game into overtime.
Issac Abbott finished the game for the Bears, scoring the game-winning goal on the power play as the Cardinals had been called for a delay of game. The Cardinals penalty kill unit had shut down five previous power play attempts by the Bears.
In goal for the Cardinals, Erik Voloshin ’24 made 32 saves. Kozic finished the evening with 16 saves for the Bears.
Dixon led all Cardinals from the faceoff circle with 10 draw wins.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Jan. 13, when they head to Colby College for a 3 p.m. puck drop.
