What a start to the season for girls ice hockey teams on Cape Cod.
The season has picked up momentum as teams are through roughly the first third of their season. Already, teams have shown just how good they are, with all four teams in these rankings combining for 21-5-1. Two teams, Falmouth High School and the Nauset/Monomoy Co-op, already have six wins, and each of the top three have only lost once.
Starts like that make a statement and showcase just how dangerous these teams can be come playoff time.
Presenting the first girls hockey rankings of the season:
1. Falmouth Clippers (6-1)
It’s hard to tell the story of the 6-1 Clippers’ season to this point without highlighting the balanced and dangerous top line, but the reality is, there’s a lot of depth on this team. Through seven games, the Clippers have scored the most goals on Cape Cod (37), and their +20-goal difference is also best in the area. Falmouth can trouble opponents regardless of which line is on the ice, and Wednesday’s 6-4 win over Sandwich underscored that fact. The six goals came off the sticks of five different skaters (Casey Roth, Jane Hostetter, Avery Johnson, Maeve Turner and Rylan Briggs) with a grand total of seven scoring points. Getting production from so many different skaters will be huge for the Clippers as they continue through the season. The Clippers’ only loss of the season came to Burlington, which reached the Div. 2 Elite Eight last season, and is hardly a bad loss on the Clippers resumé.
2. Nauset/Monomoy (6-1)
The Warriors have taken the next step in their collective development this season and are off to a great start. Last season, the team was dangerous but young, with 13 freshman and just one senior on the roster. This season, those 13 skaters are sophomores with two full years of varsity ice time, and the results of that growth can be found all over the team’s success. Driving the success of this team is an elite defense that has stifled opposition all season long. Led by junior goalie Olivia Avellar, the Warriors have only conceded 11 goals this season, which averages to just over 1.5 goals per game. The Warriors are also no slouches offensively as well, having scored 36 goals, just one behind Falmouth. Carly Brand, Gabby Bassett, and Sienna Reeves are just a few of the skaters who have played key roles this season.
3. Martha’s Vineyard (5-1)
The Vineyarders are the third of the one loss teams in the area and are currently on a three-game winning streak. The…
