Chapel Hill, N.C. — The UNC Tar Heel Ice Hockey Booster Club released architectural renderings for a new arena that will be built at Carraway Village in Chapel Hill.
The team says the arena is scheduled to open for the 2026-2027 season. The booster club reached an agreement to acquire the 3.99 acres of land located just off of I-40 in October.
The building is designed by Richar Gurlitz, the founder of Gurlitz Architectural Group in Chapel Hill, the booster club said in a press release. Other details for the arena in the release include:
- Approximately 2,000 seats
- Seven sky boxes
- A hockey lounge for adults
- Changing areas for both men and a future UNC women’s ice hockey team
- Four additional locker rooms for youth and adult hockey
The facility will host home games for UNC ice hockey as well additional ice sports and public skating sessions throughout the year.
“Richard’s design perfectly aligns with our vision of ensuring an inclusive and engaging ice experience for all,” booster club president Greg Morey said. “The Carraway property’s location adjacent to a Town of ChapelHill Park-Ride lot offering express bus service to and from campus, is the next best option we could find to being on campus in terms of easy accessibility for athletes, students and fans.”
Morey adds the arena will be paid for with a combination of private capital and donors.
“We believe this arena enhances the overall fan experience whether it’s for a hockey game, a figure skating competition or local community event,” Gurlitz said. “While there’s still work ahead, we believe this design is a solid step toward achieving the booster club’s vision of creating a home for UNC Ice Hockey and Tar Heel ice sports for the entire Chapel Hill community to enjoy.”
UNC Hockey’s Website currently operates as a Division II non-NCAA collegiate team in the Atlantic Coast Conference Hockey League.
