Donovan’s Return, Celebrini’s Debut, Among the Storylines
CHN Staff Report
If the first night of the college hockey season is any indication, we’re in for a wild ride.
Boston College 2, Quinnipiac 1
The Bobcats raised their 2023 National Championship banner. After that, though, they struggled getting out of the gate. They toom some uncharacteristic penalties, including a major and game misconduct to one of their top forwards, Sam Lipkin. Also, Collin Graf, a CHN preseason all-First Team player, went out early with an undisclosed injury. And late in the first, Andre Gasseau scored shorthanded to give the Eagles the lead.
Quinnipiac put on a significant push in the second period, and outshot BC, 13-6, while dominating territorially. But it took until the third period to get on the board, when Mason Marcellus jammed one past BC freshman goaltender Jacob Fowler.
Through a plodding overtime, the game looked destined to end in a tie. But BC’s own scoring star, Cutter Gauthier, scored with nine seconds left in the 3-on-3 to give BC the win, and spoil Quinnipiac’s special night.
A major bright spot for QU was Vinny Duplessis’ play in net. The BU transfer stopped 21 shots and looked strong doing it, as he tries to fill the shoes of Yaniv Perets.
Michigan State 5, Lake Superior State 2
New-look Michigan State got goals from key transfers Isaac Howard and Red Savage in 5-2 win. The Spartans made a lot of changes in the offseason to continue to bolster the talent level on the roster. Another key addition, Trey Augustine, got the win in his debut in net. Fellow freshman, defenseman Artyom Levshunov, a projected top-five pick in next year’s draft, was impressive in his debute — a plus-2 and a game-high five shots.
Clarkson 3, Notre Dame 1
It was an unexpected down year for Clarkson last year. But the Golden Knights went a long way towards putting that well into the rear-view mirror. They went into South Bend and defeated Notre Dame, 3-1. Cody Monds scores twice for Clarkson. Notre Dame’s scoring struggles carried over from last season, at least so far.
St. Thomas 5, St. Cloud State 4 (OT)
This was a monumental win in more ways than one for the Tommies. Though they improved from 3 to 11 wins last season, they had yet to defeat a major non-conference opponent, let alone do it on the road as they did in St. Cloud on Saturday. Also, consider that St. Thomas’ first-ever game was a 12-2…
