The U.S. struck first three minutes into the first period. Following a successful penalty kill, Kassidy Carmichael (Westford, Mass.) received a clearing pass at the offensive blue line, splitting the Canadian defenders and scoring on a breakaway wrister.
Canada knotted the score midway through the first after a defensive breakdown in front of the net resulted in Jessica Mackinnon slipping a shot into the back of the net.
Team USA jumped back on top, 2-1, with 1:53 remaining in the opening frame when Josie St. Martin (Stillwater, Minn.) rocketed a shot glove side from right inside the left circle.
Canada answered back in the second, capitalizing off a shorthanded 3-on-1 opportunity to make it 2-2.
Early in the third the U.S. went on the penalty kill, but Jordyn Petrie (Lincoln, Neb.) popped the puck loose creating a breakaway opportunity. Petrie was clipped from behind on the breakaway resulting in a penalty shot that was unsuccessful. Canada capitalized on the power play following the penalty shot to jump ahead 3-2.
