FRIBOURG, Switzerland– Former Penn State women’s hockey forward Eleri MacKay has signed a professional contract with Fribourg Gotteron of the National League in Switzerland for the 2023-24 season. She becomes the fifth Nittany Lion in program history to play professional hockey and the third to play internationally.
“I’m really excited to play for Fribourg Gotteron this upcoming season in Switzerland” stated MacKay. “Playing professionally in Europe has been a goal of mine for a long time so I’m very grateful for the opportunity and I can’t wait to get started in August.”
MacKay spent one season with the Nittany Lions as a forward on the 2022-23 team. She provided a veteran experience to the team while placing third on the team in points with 35 off 14 goals and 21 assists. She was named CHA Forward of the Week on January 30 and tallied five multi-point games in the season. In her five years in college hockey, MacKay racked up 43 goals, 50 assists for 93 points in 176 games played.
“All of the hockey teams I’ve played for throughout my career have helped shape me into the player I am today” added MacKay. “This past season at Penn State was very special to end my amateur career. My teammates, coaches and support staff made playing at Pegula a welcoming and unforgettable experience. Penn State women’s hockey had a lot of program firsts this season and I have no doubt there will be more to come!”
