SOUTH BEND, Ind. – After starting all 37 games for the Irish in 2022-23, and finishing his senior season with a .931 save percentage between the pipes, the University of Notre Dame hockey netminder, Ryan Bischel was named an AHCA/CCM Division I All-American, as announced by the association Friday night on NHL Network.
“Ryan made the most saves and had one of the best save percentages in the country,” head coach Jeff Jackson said of the recognition for his goaltender. “He did this while playing the toughest schedule in college hockey.”
The Irish team ended the season with the No. 1 rated strength of schedule, backstopped by Bischel who led them to a 16-16-5 overall record.
A Mike Richter Award Semifinalist, Bischel wrapped up the year with a nation’s best 1,183 saves and was third nationally in save percentage. The senior owned a 16-16-4 record in net last season and etched his name in the Notre Dame records book as his final save percentage ranked second-best in program history.
The Second Team West All-American honoree becomes the first since Irish All-American since Bobby Nardella in 2019, and 16th in program history. Cale Morris, who Bischel split time in the crease with as a freshman, was the last Irish goaltender to earn All-American honors (2018).
“His growth as a young man and goaltender this year was impressive,” Jackson concluded.
Previously, Bischel was named Big Ten Goaltender of the Year as well as an All-Big Ten First Team honoree. The Medina, Minnesota native, and four-year member of the Irish squad, announced late last month he plans to return to Notre Dame to conclude his collegiate career in 2023-24.
