COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 1 Ohio State women’s hockey team closed out the most successful calendar year in program history with a 6-0 win over Lindenwood Saturday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center. The victory marked the 400th for the Buckeyes (18-2-2, 13-2-1 WCHA) in the 24-year history of the program.
How it Happened
- The Buckeyes’ kicked off the New Year’s Eve matchup with a bang. Paetyn Levis put Ohio State on the board just 1:12 into the game. She was assisted by Madison Bizal and Kenzie Hauswirth.
- Jenn Gardiner extended the Scarlet & Gray lead to two goals with her own tally at 12:37. Gardiner was positioned in the crease and redirected a shot from Sophie Jaques to put the puck past Maguire. Sophie Lundin added the second assist.
- The final goal of the first period came from Emma Maltais at 18:36. Similar to the second goal, Maltais put her stick on a shot sent in front of the goal by Teagan Grant from the point and knocked it into the Lindenwood netminder. Hauswirth was credited with the second assist.
- Ohio State recorded 25 shots on goal in the opening frame and held the Lions to just five.
- The Buckeyes capitalized on their first power play opportunity of the day as Makenna Webster earned the team’s fourth goal just 20 seconds into a Lindenwood penalty for interference. She found the back of the net at 13:20 and was assisted by Gabby Rosenthal and Bizal.
- Webster added her second of the game, and the team’s second of the frame, with just 1:28 left on the clock. Rushing into the Lindenwood zone, Gardiner and Webster connected on a give-and-go with Gardiner sending the puck on net. Maguire made the save, but the rebound went off the glass and onto the stick of Webster, who beat the Lions’ goalie blocker side.
- Scoring her third consecutive goal, Makenna Webster tallied the lone goal of the third period at 5:23. Hadley Hartmetz and Lauren Bernard earned the helpers on the goal to push the Buckeyes to the 6-0 win.
Game Notes
- Makenna Webster recorded a natural hattrick on Saturday, scoring the Buckeyes’ fourth, fifth and sixth goals of the game for her third career hattrick and the first for Ohio State this season. Her performance is the third multi-goal game of her 12-game Buckeye career so far. She has recorded five multi-point games this year, including both of this weekend’s games against Lindenwood.
