Men’s Hockey Drops First Division I Game to No. 2 Minnesota

The Lindenwood men’s hockey team (0-1-0) dropped its first NCAA Division I contest on Saturday night, falling to No. 2 Minnesota (1-0-0, 0-0-0 B10) by a score of 4-0 from Minneapolis, Minn.

GAME OVERVIEW

Minnesota opened the contest with the with the first nine shots on goal, but goaltender Trent Burnham was up to the task, keeping the Lions in the game early. The Golden Gophers lit the lamp first at the 8:21 mark, taking a 1-0 lead from a powerplay goal. Lindenwood killed off another man advantage shortly after, helping the Lions settle into the game. With just over seven minutes to go in the opening frame, David Gagnon and Cade DeStefani created a two-on-one but Gagnon was denied. In total, Burnham stopped 12 shots as Lindenwood trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.

Minnesota added two goals less than eight minutes into the second period, going up 3-0 just shy of the halfway mark of the second frame. The Lions created quality chances throughout the second period, as Mitch Allard and Andy Willis each had good looks at the Minnesota net, but neither could get the Lions on the board.

The Lindenwood penalty kill was strong in the third period, as they killed off both extra-man opportunities by Minnesota. The Golden Gophers would add a fourth goal, however, going up 4-0 at the 11:48 mark of the final frame.  The Lions were unable to close the gap throughout the final 20 minutes, dropping their first Division I game, 4-0. Lindenwood was outshot 34-16 on the night.
