Virginia Field Hockey | No. 7 Virginia Hosts Two Ranked Teams This Weekend

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 7 Virginia field hockey team (5-3, 1-1 ACC) closes out its current homestand by hosting a pair of ranked teams. The Cavaliers open the weekend by taking on No. 5 Louisville (8-1, 0-1 ACC) on Friday, Sept. 30 at 3 p.m. and close it out on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. against No. 19 William & Mary (6-3, 0-0 CAA).

Admission is free for all fans.

Note on parking for Friday’s match: Due to a concert at John Paul Jones Arena on Friday evening, all cars must leave the surrounding lots following the conclusion of the game. No post-game tailgating will be permitted.

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Virginia moved up three spots in this week’s NFHCA poll to a season-beat No. 7 ranking. The Cavaliers have been ranked in the top-10 since the Week 1 poll
  • There is only one team on Virginia’s schedule that has not been ranked this season: Kent State. James Madison and Temple were both unranked when Virginia faced them but both moved into the rankings with JMU coming it at No. 21 and Temple at No. 24. Next weekend’s home opponent, Miami (Ohio) was ranked No. 24 but has slipped out of the top 25
  • Virginia is coming off a 3-0 win against Syracuse last Friday
  • The Cavaliers took a season-high 26 shots against the Orange. They were averaging 11.6 shots per game headed into that contest
  • UVA had 14 penalty corners against Syracuse. They had 33 total in their first seven games
  • Senior Cato Geusgens scored two goals against Syracuse. It was the third multi-goal game of her career and the first since her freshman season
  • Geusgens scored the first goal of the game against Syracuse making her the fifth different Cavalier in five victories to score the game-winning goal
  • Senior Laura Janssen leads the Cavaliers with seven goals this season. She ranks fourth in the ACC in goals per game (0.88) and 13th in the NCAA
  • Janssen has seven goals in eight games this season and has scored in all but two games this season
  • Virginia has four players ranked in the top-10 in the conference in assists per game: Jans Croon is fifth at 0.50 per game, Meghen Hengerer eighth at 0.43 and Annie McDonough and Daniela Mendez Trendler 10th with 0.38 per game
