Tournament Will Have Only 8 Teams
CHN Staff Report
Atlantic Hockey announced its composite 2022-23 schedule today, and with it, another shift in the format for its postseason tournament.
For the first time, all games will be played at campus sites of the higher seed. Also, only the top eight finishers in the regular season will qualify. Atlantic Hockey currently has 10 teams, with Robert Morris set to rejoin the league as the 11th in 2023-24.
Last season, the league held its postseason tournament in Utica. Utica, which is looking to move its athletic department to D-II and play D-I hockey, offered its home arena free of charge to the league, in hopes it would also lead to Utica’s acceptance into Atlantic Hockey. That hasn’t happened yet. In prior years, the league played its postseason tournament in Buffalo and Rochester.
The first round will be a best-of-3 quarterfinal. The semifinals will be the following week, also best-of-3.
There will then be a one-game championship on March 18 at the home of the highest remaining seed.
