Members of the women’s hockey team that won gold for Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing will be getting together to celebrate that accomplishment, this time on ice that will be much more.
An excursion on the Hornblower as well as trips on the Niagara Falls Zipline and the Whirlpool Aero Car are among the activities they will will enjoy, weather permitting, when they take part in Hockey Canada Foundation’s Golf and Gala June 23-24 in Niagara Falls.
Besides the investiture of nine people into the Order of Hockey in Canada, including Ken Dryden, Lanny McDonald the late Guy Lafleur, the two-day fundraising event will see the Canadian men’s hockey team receiving rings for capturing the 2021 world championship as an underdog.
Larry Landon, a Niagara Falls native and chair of the local organizing committee for the Golf and Gala, pointed out Canada wasn’t expected to be the last one standing when the 16-team tournament wrapped up in Riga, Latvia.
“They weren’t supposed to win after going down 0-3,” said Landon, executive director of the Professional Hockey Players’ Association.
Originally scheduled to take place in June 2020, the event was cancelled due to pandemic.
Upwards of 1,100 people from across Canada are expected to attend the Gala taking place on the Thursday night at Niagara Falls Convention Centre. On tap the next day is golf at both courses at Legends on the Niagara.
Alumni associations from several National Hockey League have already purchased tables for a dinner that includes live and silent auctions. TSN will broadcast portions of the event nationally.
“This is one of the largest – if not, the largest – hockey event to ever come to our city (Niagara Falls),” Landon said.
Since the Order of Hockey in Canada was established in 2012, three people have been honoured. Nine in all will be inducted this month in Niagara Falls, as COVID-19 cancelled ceremonies for the past two classes couldn’t be held.
